Celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday at Camp Smokey during the 2024 California State Fair in Sacramento

July 13, 2024 – The 2024 California State Fair in Sacramento is open! Each year, through an interagency partnership, the Forest Service, CAL FIRE, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Firefighters Burn Institute invite visitors of all ages to an engaging, educational, and interactive fire safety and prevention exhibit called Camp Smokey.

This year, Camp Smokey guests can earn a free, limited-edition Smokey Bear 80th Birthday Bandana by completing each of six unique educational stations. People of all ages are invited to begin their journey by picking up a passport to the Incident Command Station. They will learn about home and wilderness fire safety, fire prevention, responsible recreation, the history of Smokey Bear, traditional Native American fire use, and the role of fire in nature. Smokey Bear and his friends perform a fun and educational puppet show at the beginning of each hour. This year, guests will receive a limited-edition item after completing each station!

Guests will have the opportunity to tour fire trucks, play games, win prizes, cut logs to tag and take home, dress up as a firefighter, learn from fire safety experts, and more! Camp Smokey is open every day of the State Fair Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The California State Fair runs from July 12-28, 2024.

This year’s exhibits include the Bureau of Indian Affairs Community Arbor, the Forest Service Ranger House, Bureau of Land Management trail improvements, and an interactive 911 education experience where visitors can practice calling 911 for help and relaying important information to a live dispatcher in the event of an emergency.

On Saturday, July 20 at 12:15 p.m., the Camp Smokey Interagency Team will be hosting a Smokey Bear 80th Birthday Celebration. There will be activities, cake, and of course, Smokey himself!
