The Last Ride of a Legend

There is no doubt about it, Brazil gave it their all so that Marta could win the gold medal.

Unable to play in the quarter-finals and semi-finals due to a red card in the final group stage match, Marta watched as her team-mates defeated hosts France and then systematically demolished favourites Spain, winning 4-2.

Midfielder Angelina spoke of the motivation Marta’s farewell gave her and her teammates. “Honestly, Marta didn’t play in those games, we did it for her. We want to give her a really great send-off. It was my dream to play with Marta – and now it’s a dream come true. To do it in the final of the Olympic Games, it’s just perfect.”

The midfielder is one of the most decorated players to have worn the boot, yet she is playing in her sixth Olympics and third final, and has yet to win a gold medal. In fact, despite Brazil being so synonymous with football, they have never won gold at the tournament, often narrowly losing.

He can change this history, bring the top prize of the competition back to his country and give final shape to his career, which is one of the best in history.

It would be a fitting end to her international career, during which she proved herself a star on the pitch, scoring 13 goals at the Olympics and 17 at the World Cup.

She was also an influential figure off the field.

Off the pitch, Marta has gained a reputation as a woman fighting for equality in sport, lobbying for support for women’s sport.

She had a significant impact on the development of the sport to which she dedicated her life. There is a whole generation of women who are seen, respected, admired and loved today because of her efforts to draw attention to what they do.

She even wrote an article for her peers and young girls around the world who would continue the sport long after her death in The Player’s Tribune.

Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s match, Marta is leaving the sport in better shape than she found it.
