Kevin McKidd knows it’s not going to be a walk in the park for his character Owen Hunt and his wife Teddy Altman when Grey’s Anatomy returns for its 21st season.

As fans may recall, the couple found themselves at the center of controversy — and were ultimately fired — after Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) discovered Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) secret Alzheimer’s research.

McKidd, 51, opened up to PEOPLE about what the future holds for Teddy (Kim Raver) and Owen on the red carpet at the premiere of It ends with us in New York on Tuesday, August 6.

“It’s a rocky road for them to get back to the hospital,” he joked. “It’s a lot of fun when it happens.”

“I can’t say too much, but it also causes tension between Teddy and Owen,” he added. “Because there have been decisions made, but I think they’re going to fight to get there. But it’s a little difficult for a while.”

The Scottish actor also opened up about his future on the show after being a part of the ABC medical drama since 2008. He said: “I don’t know the answer to that question. I love playing this role.”

“Meg Marinis, our showrunner, is writing the role and all of our roles,” he added. “I feel like she’s refreshed all of us as characters. She’s given us new things to work on and work through as characters. As long as that continues, I’m happy.”
