Diversity It was recently reported that Dewayne Perkins, Amin Joseph, Gabrielle Dennis, and DomiNQue Perry are the latest names added to the TriStar Pictures film, further fueling fans’ anticipation.

Written by Syreeta Singleton and directed by Lawrence Lamont, the project is already generating a lot of interest, although details about the plot and main characters are still being kept under wraps.

Meet the new members of the star-studded cast

The new cast members bring a wealth of talent and diversity to the project, each with impressive credits in television and film.

Dewayne Perkins is an Emmy-nominated writer, producer, actor and comedian whose credits include Apple’s The Studio, Netflix’s The Upshaws and Peacock’s Saved by the Bell. Perkins’s sharp wit and comedic timing make him a perfect fit for the buddy comedy, and his involvement will certainly add a unique dimension to the film.

Amin Joseph is best known for his role as Jerome “Unc” Saint in the critically acclaimed FX series “Snowfall.” Joseph has shown his versatility as an actor in his work across genres, from action-packed roles in films like “The Expendables” and “Baywatch” to more dramatic appearances in “Justified: City Primeval” and “Send Help.” His addition to the cast suggests that this film will balance comedy with depth and substance.

Gabrielle Dennis has charmed audiences with her performances in HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Apple TV+’s “The Big Door Prize.” She has also starred in popular series such as “The Bobby Brown Story,” “The Game,” and Netflix’s “The Upshaws.” Dennis has become consistently known for her comedic chops and ability to bring warmth and believability to her characters.

DomiNQue Perry’s best-known role may be that of Tasha on HBO’s Insecure, where she became a fan favorite. Currently starring in Diarra From Detroit, Perry continues to impress with her dynamic acting skills and strong screen presence.

The Issa Rae-produced comedy Buddy is one of the hottest upcoming movies in Hollywood

As BOSSIP previously reported, the creative force behind this film is as extraordinary as the talent of the actors on screen.

The film is produced by Issa Rae and Sara Diya Rastogi of HOORAE, along with Deniese Davis of ColorCreative and Charles D. King, James Lopez and Poppy Hanks of MACRO Film Studios. Singleton, who wrote the screenplay, also co-produces, with Keke Palmer and Sharon Palmer serving as executive producers through Palmer’s Big Boss production company.

The involvement of these industry powerhouses is a clear sign that the project will be a box office success and attract a huge fan base.

The upcoming buddy comedy comes at a pivotal time for black-led films in Hollywood. Issa Rae, who serves as one of the producers, recently spoke out about the dwindling support for black stories following the cancellation of her show Rap Sh!t.

Rae expressed her concerns, saying, “Now you can see very clearly that our stories are less of a priority. I’m pessimistic because no one is holding anyone accountable — and I can, sure, but at what cost? I can’t force you to make my stuff. It’s made me take more steps to try to be independent in the future if I have to.”

The excitement for the project also comes from the fact that successful buddy comedies featuring black characters have been few and far between in recent years. The last major success in the genre was Will Packer’s Girls Trip, which became a cultural phenomenon upon its release. Fans were yearning for another film in the vein of classics like the 1997 hit BAPS, starring Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle-Reid. With a powerful cast and creative team, this upcoming film has the potential to fill that void and deliver the laughs and heart that audiences crave.
