I’m a fashion editor and here are, hands down, the 13 best outfits from season 4 of Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is chaotic in the best sense of the word. Does the plot ever make sense? No. Does the fashion ever make sense? Literally never. But that’s exactly why I love this Netflix original series, and why four seasons later it’s still one of my favorite shows to watch. Because what is life if not a chaotic blur of vaguely connected events and questionable choices that then force us to think, why did i do that? It’s a show that reminds me to let loose and have fun, especially when it comes to clothes. Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper is hands down the most interesting character on TV right now (notice I said “most interesting,” not the best), which makes it a show I can watch even without the sound. Below are 13 of my absolute favorite outfits from Emily in Paris season four, containing good, bad and inexplicable elements.

Where to Stay and Party for the Ultimate ‘Emily in Paris’ Vacation According to a Former American in Paris

1. Bold Monochrome

Netflix

I’ll start on a high note. Both Emily and Mindy beautifully demonstrate that monochromatic outfits are always a good idea, especially if you opt for a bold color like cobalt or canary yellow. My only advice for those who copy these vibrant looks? Swap out the statement accessories for something simpler—super-bright colors don’t need much help standing out from the crowd and can benefit from a streamlined silhouette.

2. Coordinating Checkerboard

Netflix

In Emily’s favor, checkerboard has been in style for a few years now, but this combination doesn’t do it for me. The matching bucket hat, scarf, and trench coat seem a bit too ’60s spy. Even one contrasting or solid color would have improved the look significantly and made it seem less like a costume.

3. Double Sherpa and a touch of red

Netflix

An oversized sherpa coat is always a good idea for winter, and I love her matching sherpa bag here. The oversized bandana-inspired scarf is also a fun, not-too-crazy addition to the mix. Overall, I give this an 8 out of 10 for wearability — swap the over-the-knee boots for faux leather leggings, and the newsboy cap for a wool hat, beanie, or even a baseball cap, and I’d wear this combo in a heartbeat.

4. Polly Pocket Proportions

Netflix

I know Collins is playing beloved ’90s toy Polly Pocket in an upcoming film, but that doesn’t mean she has to start dressing like one just yet. The proportions of this “fit” are just plain weird. Normally I’d suggest layering a bolero jacket (which is exactly what this cropped sweater wants) with something much longer to strike a striking balance of proportions, but I’m afraid this pink knit is just too oddly shaped to save it. Add to that the stiffened, semi-flared shorts, and the whole thing looks too stiff to be functional. The only saving grace is this gorgeous shade of green.

5. Print clash at a professional level

Netflix

Here’s how to mix patterns like a pro! The detailing on the cape is very close to the base color of her dress, which helps tie the two patterned elements together. Her accessories are super simple and streamlined—a thin black belt, gold hoops—and her slicked-back hair and soft lip color are the perfect finishing touch. C’est magnifique!

6. Muppet Chaos

Netflix

I love Muppet-inspired faux furs as much as the next girl, but they’re best worn as standalone pieces. I’d go for this look if her standalone pieces were solid shades that mimicked the different shades of her multi-colored coat, but adding a second and third pattern to the mix makes the whole look too busy. Despite the fun combination of blue, purple, and pink, this one sadly doesn’t do it for me.

7. A bold blouse

Netflix

This is “Italian art teacher” at her best. Wearing the collar open and tying the beetle print green back into the skirt and earrings is definitely the way to make this busy top seem more accessible. I would definitely sign up for her Oil Painting 101 class.

8. Audrey Hepburn Cosplay

Netflix

Yes, that “matching” is a pretty literal nod to Roman Holiday but I absolutely love it and would copy it any day of the week. The straw bag with gold chain strap and cropped gingham jacket add a modern touch, as does her half-updo. In fact, with the trendy Mary Jane flats and layered midi skirt, I’d say this is Emily’s most approachable look of Season 4.

9. Masquerade Madness

Netflix

When it comes to Emily’s least accessible looks, this black and white ensemble definitely tops the list. I’ll admit, though, that for a black and white masquerade ball, it’s pretty spot on. The striped jumpsuit and lace mask look very Venetian, and the removable half-gown is certainly impressive. Plus, you probably don’t have to worry about anyone showing up to the party wearing the same outfit as you…

10. A tribute to a fashion icon

Netflix

I admit this “cut” won’t be everyone’s cup of tea — even I have mixed feelings about that crazy brooch — but I can’t help but love any look that pays homage to the one and only Iris Apfel. The eclectic fashion icon had a unique sense of style that thrived on rich colors, bold prints, and a ton of accessories (basically the antithesis of Coco Chanel’s French simplicity). Apfel passed away in 2024 at the age of 102, but I’m sure she would have given this jacquard suit her stamp of approval.

11. 2010, Is that you?

Netflix

Everything about this outfit screams 2010s in the worst possible way. The fringed scarf, the rhinestone heels, the ear cuff, it’s just too much, and I haven’t even gotten to the actual outfit yet. This is, again, a case where I think each piece could be fun to play with on its own (although those pants may be beyond saving), but when you’re putting together an outfit made entirely of “look at me” pieces, especially ones that feel very era-specific, it’s incredibly difficult to pull off. Better luck next time, Em.

12. Super fashionable jacket

Netflix

This jacket is a perfect fit for many fall 2024 trends—burgundy and red are all the rage, as are leather jackets that are moving away from the biker silhouette, and hourglass shapes are slowly but surely evolving from microtrend to macrotrend. It’s so good you almost forget about that houndstooth beret… almost.

13. 1960s Ski Bunny

Netflix

To end on a high note, we have another Hepburn-inspired look from one of my favorite movies, Charade. The giant sunglasses and faux fur hat are very ’60s, as is the boxy jacket and tight ski pants combo. And while it may seem kitschy, it does seem like practical ski wear, so I have to give Emily props.
