Broncos quarterback Bo Nix did something that hadn’t been done since 1967.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix did something that hadn’t been done since 1967.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean McVay has named rookie quarterback Bo Nix one of six team captains for the upcoming 2024 season. Nix was named a captain alongside wide receiver Courtland Sutton, offensive guard Quinn Meinerz, cornerback Pat Surtain II, inside linebacker Alex Singleton and kicker Will Lutz.

The captains were elected by their Broncos teammates, with Sutton being the only returning captain.

Nix becomes the first Broncos rookie to be named team captain since quarterback Floyd Little in 1967. Nicknamed “The Franchise,” Little was the Broncos’ sixth overall pick in the 1967 NFL Draft after being named a three-time All-American at Syracuse. Little became a first-team All-Pro, the NFL’s leading running back in 1971, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee.

The Broncos named Nix a captain after officially designating him as their starting quarterback before the third preseason game.

The 12th overall pick out of Oregon was named the starter over Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson after impressive performances in the first two preseason games.

Since his first preseason game, Nix has shown his mettle against Sean Payton’s offense, going 15-of-21 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Nix followed that up with 8-of-9 for 80 yards and a touchdown in Week 2.

Nix will also be the first Broncos rookie quarterback to start the season in Week 1 since franchise legend and American Football Hall of Fame inductee John Elway.

“It’s going to be a special moment,” Nix said when he was named the starter on Aug. 21, via the team’s website. “Obviously, it’s great to share it with a great player like John Elway, but (I) definitely want to (go) out there and (do) everything I can for the team.

Nix enters the NFL with a wealth of experience after spending three seasons at Auburn and two at Oregon. No quarterback in NCAA history has started more games than Nix, who has started 61 in five seasons.

Nix solidified himself as a clear first-round pick in his fifth college season, when he completed 77.4 percent of his passes for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He ranked first in the FBS in passing touchdowns and second in passing yards as Oregon went 12-2.

Among the historic class of 2024 rookies at quarterback, only Nix and Chicago Bears quarterback (and first-round pick) Caleb Williams were named team captains.
