Johnny Gaudreau’s Wife Meredith Celebrates 3rd Wedding Anniversary 6 Days After His Death: ‘I Will Love You Forever’

NHL star and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were killed in a bicycle accident last Thursday, a day before their sister’s wedding in New Jersey.

Johnny Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, has posted a heartfelt tribute to her late husband in honor of the couple’s third wedding anniversary, less than a week after he tragically died in a bicycle accident alongside his brother Matthew Gaudreau.

“I never post this much, but John deserves it,” Meredith wrote on Wednesday, September 4, alongside a carousel of photos of her and her late husband together over the years.

“3 years ago today, I became yours forever. One of the happiest days of my life, including the night we got engaged and the days we had our babies. The day I met you, I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to marry him.’ And every day after that got better and better. I love you forever, John, and I’m so proud to be your wife.”

Johnny, an NHL star who played 11 seasons for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames, was killed last Thursday night along with his brother Matthew when a suspected drunk driver struck them as they rode bicycles in Oldsmans Township, N.J., near their hometown in Salem County, N.J.

Johnny was 31. Matthew was 29.

Johnny and Matthew were in town to serve as groomsmen at their sister Katie’s wedding, scheduled for the next day.

According to New Jersey State Police, driver Sean M. Higgins has since been arrested and charged with two counts of causing death by motor vehicle accident after police said he was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol when he fatally struck the Gaudreau siblings after attempting to pass another vehicle. Higgins remains in custody without bail, according to jail records.

Johnny and his wife, Meredith, have two children together: daughter Noa, who will be 2 in October, and son Johnny, 7 months old.

Matthew and his wife, Madeline, are expecting their first child together later this year, already named Tripp. As of Wednesday morning, donations for Madeline and the couple’s unborn baby have reached nearly $600,000 on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family.

Meredith has posted several tributes to her late husband and late brother-in-law in recent days.

“Thank you for the best years of my life. Despite your loss, I am still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours. I love you so much,” Meredith wrote last Saturday, in her first message since her husband’s death.

“You were perfect,” she added. “Some days it was too good to be true. I love every single thing about you. You are my forever and I can’t wait to be with you again. I love you so much forever and ever.”
