Campbell, 54, was honored at a fashion show and styling ceremony in Harlem for her iconic supermodel career spanning several decades as reported By USA Today. Although she was supposed to receive the award from Anna Wintour, her alleged lateness caused Wintour to leave the ceremony early, forcing Samira Nasr, editor-in-chief Harper’s Bazaar, come and present the award.

In her speech honoring Campbell, Wintour joked:

“I am a very punctual person and I am honored to give a speech today in front of someone who is often late.”

Here’s what Naomi had to say in response

Upon arriving at the ceremony, the legendary supermodel, who made history in 1989 when she became the first black model to appear on the cover of the magazine Fashion magazine, had her respond to Wintour’s minor remark.

“Yes, Naomi is always late. But I believe in my higher power and I want to thank my higher power for putting me here.”

The mother-of-two then surprised the audience when she said she would have preferred Nasr to present her with the Icon Award instead of “the other lady,” a suspicious reference to Wintour, according to a video obtained by USA Today.

“It wasn’t my choice to have a second lady (Wintour). I would have preferred to have this.”

While it was surprising, Campbell was quick to turn the moment into something positive, expressing gratitude to Wintour for her role in breaking barriers in the modeling industry.

Wintour helped Campbell land her first release Fashionand supported her early on in her career.

“We have to thank Anna Wintour though because she took the time to come here and present me with an award even though I wasn’t here,” Campbell told the crowd on Wednesday.

“So thank you, Anna Wintour, for supporting my career since 1987, for meeting a young black girl from South London at British Vogue and taking the risk to shoot me. And thank you for your influence and your continued support in pushing fashion forward.”

Earlier that evening, Wintour also shared loving words about the runway legend, calling Campbell “brave, intelligent, and completely, unapologetically herself” in her intro.

She added;

“Naomi is honestly one of the most fearless people I know, a trait that was evident at the very beginning of her career when she began speaking her truth about inequality and injustice. And that was at a time when that wasn’t as common. Naomi’s fearlessness has benefited the entire fashion industry. While I can say that being the destination of that fearlessness can be – oh, what can I say? Quite exciting? But it’s her honesty that makes her so incredible, a muse and an inspiration to designers.”

This is not the first time Campbell’s delay has caused problems

In 2016, during a discussion about the comedy series Absolutely fantastic with Page Six, actress Joanna Lumley revealed that Campbell was three hours late for filming a popular British television show.

“Lumley recalled how a strict stage manager told Campbell: ‘You’re working with a lot of very professional actresses. They all showed up on time and knew their lines. Honey, you’ll do it tomorrow or you’re out,'” the outlet reported.

Apparently she showed up promptly the next day at 9 a.m.

What do you think of Campbell’s suspicious response to Wintour? Was it justified?
