Former US President Donald Trump has praised Brittany Mahomes for “standing up” for him online amid controversy surrounding her apparent support for his 2024 presidential campaign.

In a post shared to his Truth Social account on September 4, the Republican presidential candidate paid tribute to the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “I want to thank the beautiful Brittany Mahomes for standing up for me so strongly, and the fact that MAGA is the largest and most powerful political movement in the history of our now-failing country,” Trump wrote.

“With crime and illegal immigration totally out of control, INFLATION ravaging every American, and a world that laughs at the stupidity of our hapless “leaders,” it’s nice to see someone who loves our country and wants to save it from DAMAGE.”

Trump added: “What a great couple. See you both at the Super Bowl!”

Her post comes after Mahomes – who is expecting his third child with the NFL star – sparked a social media storm after signaling her support for Trump’s re-election campaign. On Instagram, the 29-year-old had “liked” a post from Trump titled: “The Republican Platform 2024.”

The message outlined a list of 20 actions that would be priorities for the second Trump administration, such as “sealing the border” and “cutting off federal funding to any school that promotes critical race theory, radical gender ideology, or other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content on our children.”

Although Mahomes appeared to remove her like from the post after the backlash, she subsequently liked comments on posts promoting “Trump-Vance 2024.”

In response to the criticism, the Super Bowl champion’s wife shared a message for her “haters” in a post shared on her Instagram Story. “I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have deep-rooted issues that you refuse to heal since childhood,” she wrote on August 23. “There’s no reason for your brain to be fully developed and you hate seeing others succeed.”

Many critics have also pointed out that Mahomes’ support for Trump’s campaign could negatively impact his friendship with Taylor Swift, the girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who has publicly condemned Trump. After keeping quiet about her political beliefs for nearly a decade, Swift made her first endorsements in 2018 to Tennessee Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives.

In his 2020 documentary Miss American, Swift has spoken out about her decision to speak out politically. “During the (2016) presidential election, I was in such a horrible place that I wasn’t going to get my head out,” she explained. “These aren’t your father’s celebrities and these aren’t your father’s Republicans… I have to be on the right side of history.”

During the 2020 presidential election, Swift publicly endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. After the Black Lives Matter protests that year, Swift tweeted directly at Trump: “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, do you have the nerve to feign moral supremacy before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts, the shootings start’??? We will vote to impeach you in November.”

However, the Republican candidate, who was recently convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records, didn’t shy away from sharing his own opinions on the 14-time Grammy winner. In an interview with Variety Last June, Trump was asked what he thought of Swift, to which he replied: “She really has star quality.”

“I think she’s very beautiful, very beautiful! I think she’s very beautiful. I think she’s liberal. She probably doesn’t like Trump. I’ve heard she’s very talented. I think she’s very beautiful, in fact – unusually beautiful!”

When asked specifically what he thought of his music, Trump admitted: “I don’t know it well.”

He also questioned whether the pop star was truly politically liberal, asking: “Is she liberal, or is that just a facade? Is she legitimately liberal? Isn’t that a facade? I’m surprised a country star can be successful being a liberal.”
