Celebrity Race Across the World’s Scott Mills opened up about the early days of his relationship with husband Sam Vaughn.

In the fourth episode of the second season, aired tonight (September 4), the BBC Radio presenter and his then-fiancée discussed how, despite their mutual attraction, things weren’t working out between them for some time.

“The moment I met Sam, everything became a blur,” Scott said in a confessional, explaining that he had never felt this way about anyone before, but circumstances got in the way.

“We both came out of long-term relationships. I had full steam ahead. He didn’t. So he was like, ‘errrmmmm I’m not sure I can do this right now’. I was devastated.”

Sam said: “Scott asked me, ‘Do you want to just be friends?’ I had to be honest and I said, ‘I think I do right now,’ and Scott, rightfully at that point, said, ‘I can’t do that,’ and he didn’t talk to me for about six, seven months…

“I think over time I missed him more and more and realized what I was letting go of.”

Both said the trip helped them reaffirm their love for each other. For about six months before the race, there were weeks when they didn’t see each other for more than an hour or two.

In today’s episode we saw the stars racing from São Paulo to Tigre, before finally leaving Brazil, passing through Uruguay and Paraguay and reaching Argentina.

Scott and Sam spent a lot of money to get a fast ferry, while Jeff and Freddie Brazier faced a long delay but generally got along fine. Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy Parisi argued again about money but finally found time to do something romantic, namely take a tango lesson.

Kola Bokinni from Ted Lasso lost his passport and had a fight with his cousin Mary Ellen. The person who gave them the job at the vineyard managed to call and find her, but it took them a lot of time.

Scott and Sam were the first to reach the checkpoint, followed by Kelly and Jeremy seven hours later. Kola and Mary Ellen arrived three hours later in third place. The episode ended before Jeff and Freddie arrived, so we don’t know how far behind they are.

Celebrity Race Across the World airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer. Previous episodes of both the celebrity and civilian versions can be watched on iPlayer.
