BTS’s Suga Unstoppable Amid DUI Scandal; Scores Hit After Hit Despite No New Releases: ‘Messed With The Wrong Fandom’

BTS’ Suga continues to dominate the charts even without releasing new music. His solo work under the alias Agust D is experiencing a renaissance thanks to devoted fans who support his older works.

On September 4, The Last from his debut mixtape Agust D reached a Billboard milestone, topping the World Digital Song Sales Chart for the first time since its release eight years ago. It’s just one of many chart-topping achievements for Suga amid his recent DUI scandal that has boosted his career stats.

BTS Suga Hits New Highs in Digital Music Charts

According to Forbes on September 5, BTS’s Suga scored two new hits on the UK charts this week. His songs The Last and Polar Night entered both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads charts for the first time. Fans appear to be buying these songs in almost equal numbers, as they are ranked next to each other on both charts.

The Last debuted on the charts at number 55 on the Official Singles Sales chart and number 54 on the Official Singles Downloads chart. On the other hand, Polar Night, which following SUGA’s recent DUI hearing, rose to number 1 on the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart on August 23, also debuted at number 56 on the Official Singles Sales chart and entered the Official Singles Downloads chart at number 55.

Suga has previously charted on these charts, but only with a few songs. With these two new hits, he has increased his total number of chart appearances. Including these new entries, Suga now has five solo chart hits.

Suga demonstrates global dominance

After Suga’s drunk driving case hit the news, his fans rallied around him, showing him a huge amount of support. Earlier in August, his stage name Agust D gained popularity thanks to his albums D-day, D-2and his debut album, all climbing to the top of the iTunes Worldwide album chart. Tracks from D-daylike Snooze, Haegeum and The Last, who were part of his world tour, made a comeback in a big way.

As of August 24, Agust D has made history as the only artist to have five songs reach No. 1 on the iTunes Country Charts worldwide, while The Last has reached No. 1 on the iTunes US charts for the first time. These are just a few of the records that Min Yoongi, also known as Suga, has achieved in just one month.

Fans say: “I messed with the wrong fandom”

In a climate where many Korean stars face negative reaction to scandals like DUIs, Suga’s career seems largely unscathed. Many believe that Korean media deliberately hyped up the incident when Yoongi was pulled over for riding an electric scooter while intoxicated. Fans say they “messed with the wrong fandom.”

The BTS member has since received an outpouring of support from fans and industry peers, including PSY, actress Park Sohee, The Rose’s Woosung, Pachinko author Lee Min Jin, Mui Sakamoto (daughter of late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto), and more.
