Police raid Delta drug hideout, arrest 40 suspected dealers

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 40 drug peddlers at the popular Swees Spirit Hotel junction in Asaba, the state capital.

NEWS NIGERIA reports that the police in collaboration with other security operatives carried out an operation along Asaba/Okpanam Road, near the Midwives Market on Tuesday evening.

It was gathered that the operation was initiated in response to credible intelligence information about a criminal hideout where illegal drug activity was rife, causing significant suffering and harm to the public.

According to a source who declined to be identified and was told by PUNCH on Wednesday, security operatives have arrested no fewer than 40 suspects for their involvement in the drug racket.

He added that the operation would send a clear message to all that the security apparatus was determined to eradicate the scourge of drug trafficking and other crimes in the state.

The source said: “During the operation, which was conducted precisely and carefully, 40 people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in illegal drug trafficking.

“The suspects, in a desperate bid to avoid arrest, fled into a storm drain along Okpanam Road, prompt and coordinated police action ensured their apprehension.”

Delta State Police Spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the report to journalists on Wednesday and said he was aware of the operation, adding that the command would soon issue a press release on the matter.

He said, “Yes, it’s true. We searched the area last night and arrested 40 suspects, but we haven’t made an official announcement yet, but we are planning to issue a press release on the matter.”
