Naomi Campbell apparently criticizes Anna Wintour in acceptance speech after Vogue editor calls her out for being late

Naomi Campbell and Anna Wintour experienced a tense atmosphere ahead of New York Fashion Week.

The British supermodel, 58, was honored with the Fashion Icon Award at the 17th annual Harlem’s Fashion Row Fashion Show & Style Awards on Tuesday, September 3 in New York City. When she was presented by Wintour, 74, Fashion the editor-in-chief said she was “presenting today to someone who is often late,” according to a video shared on Portal X (formerly Twitter).

Wintour then handed control to the magazine’s editor-in-chief Samira Nasr. Harper’s Bazaar, who presented Campbell with the award. According to TMZ, Wintour left the event early to attend the US Open.

In her acceptance speech, Campbell appeared to address Wintour’s remark about being late. “I want to say this. Everything is going to work out the way it does,” she told the crowd. “It wasn’t my choice to have the other woman. I would have preferred that,” Campbell said, pointing to Nasr.

Despite the criticism, Wintour noted Campbell’s many positive qualities in her speech. According to USA Today, she said the model was “bold, brilliant and completely, unapologetically herself.”

Wintour also said of the honoree, “Naomi is honestly one of the most fearless people I know, a quality that was evident at the very beginning of her career when she began speaking truth to inequality and injustice. And that was at a time when that wasn’t as prevalent.”

She continued, according to USA Today: “Naomi’s courage has benefited the entire fashion industry. While I can say that being on the other end of that fearlessness can be — oh, what can I say? Quite exciting? But it’s her honesty that makes her so amazing, a muse and an inspiration to designers.”

Campbell had some kind words for Wintour in return, thanking the editor for taking the time “to come here and give me an award even though I wasn’t here,” and for launching her career.

“So thank you, Anna Wintour, for your support in my career since 1987, for meeting a young black girl from south London in the offices of British Vogue and taking the risk to shoot me,” she said. “And thank you for your influence and your continued support in pushing fashion forward.”
