State of Decay 3 becomes Undead Labs’ primary focus as it continues work on State of Decay 2

State of Decay developer Undead Labs has announced the end of content updates for State of Decay 2 and is now focusing on the upcoming State of Decay 3.

Undead Labs has released nearly 40 content updates for State of Decay 2 in the six years since its 2018 launch on PC and Xbox One. In a blog post , Undead Labs said that the final update for State of Decay 2, Update 38, is due out later this year. It aims to fix some long-standing issues, introduce additional quality of life improvements, and permanently unlock seasonal or previously limited content like winter outfits and the Wizard Van.

Of course, State of Decay 2 will still be playable and as an Xbox Game Studios title, the game will remain part of the Xbox Game Pass library.

“We know you love the world we’ve created and the incredible community you’ve helped build,” Undead Labs said. “While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we’re also hard at work on the next evolution of the series!

“Our ambition is to create the best zombie survival simulator in the history of the series, which is why we will devote our focus and resources to the production of the upcoming third part, State of Decay 3.”

Microsoft announced State of Decay 3 four years ago during its Xbox Games Showcase 2020. After a long period of radio silence, State of Decay 3 returned over the summer with a new trailer, below, though it still doesn’t have a release date.

We’ve also learned that Undead Labs has partnered with Obsidian, the creator of Fallout: New Vegas, Grounded, and Avowed, to develop a “shared world feature” that will give State of Decay 3 players more flexible online collaboration options.

“The critically acclaimed Grounded, released with Undead Labs’ shared save technology, and State of Decay 3 will build on it to deliver a truly open world of cooperative multiplayer,” Microsoft said.

In 2022, Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty announced that State of Decay 3 would be developed on Unreal Engine 5, with Gears of War creator The Coalition helping with the development.

Undead Labs itself has faced accusations of toxic working conditions and lack of supervision.
