Chloë Sevigny says becoming a mother at 45 had an unexpected impact on her marriage

Chloë Sevigny has been a household name in fashion and independent films for over 30 years, but since the birth of her son in 2020 and her marriage to Sinisa Mackovic, she’s added that of wife and working mom to her roster of roles.

Becoming a mother to her four-year-old son Vanja was a “miracle” for Sevigny, 49, as she said Rolling Stone in January, “I didn’t think it would happen to me.” After such a dramatic change in life, many would expect Boys don’t cry star experienced the marital tensions that many parents struggle with when a new member joins their family.

However, in the September 4 cover story Cuttingtheir first print edition, Sevigny says motherhood has brought her closer to Mackovic. “I value my relationship with my husband so much more,” she says.

“I appreciate him and how committed he is and what he does for our household more than I could ever have imagined. I would do anything to not lose him.”

Sevigny says Mackovic, a Croatian art gallery director she met in 2018, handles most of the logistics for the family. “I don’t want to do it alone,” she adds, joking that her long Hollywood career has made her a “spoiled actress” who doesn’t even know how to buy a plane ticket.

Her husband also helped her cope with her mother guilt during the hectic period of producing and promoting projects like her new film Hello, sadly and Ryan Murphy Monsters: The Menendez Story.

“When I have one of my anxiety spirals, he always calms me down,” she says. “What’s so nice about my husband is that he’s so capable. I can trust him to take care of everything so I don’t have to, and that’s really relaxing.”

Still, Sevigny tries to be strict with both herself and her son when it comes to things like leaving him with a babysitter or not letting him sleep in his parents’ bed.

“He’s a well-adjusted child,” she says. “He’s very quiet – he knows that if he wants to make noise, he has to go outside.” And like many mothers, the actress doesn’t try to get away from her son too much. “I actually prefer him to be with me, and then I feel less guilty about being at work.”

“I like having him close. Maybe I spoil him or spoil him too much, but I feel more at ease,” she adds. “All our faults, we’ve done them to ourselves. We’re in our bed and we have to lie in it. But now, it’s like I can sleep better when he’s there.”
