PlayStation 30th Anniversary Plans Revealed, Sony Directly Announces PS5 Pro in Instagram Story

If you don’t know how old we are, Sony is here to remind us, as PlayStation’s 30th anniversary is just around the corner! To celebrate this milestone, Sony has announced a range of activities and more for gamers.

Here’s what awaits PlayStation players in the coming days:

  • My first GT. Look out for a free trial this holiday season, designed to bring a wide range of players of all skill levels to the globally acclaimed Gran Turismo 7. This upcoming version will feature some of the beloved cars, tracks, and races that bring back the nostalgia and excitement of your first GT experience. Look out for more details on My First GT, available to all PS5 and PS4 players this holiday season.
  • Digital game soundtracks. In partnership with Sony Music, each month from October through January we’ll be releasing a digital soundtrack collection of fan-favorite PlayStation series on Spotify for the first time ever. You’ll be able to stream the following game soundtracks on Spotify or purchase them from a variety of digital music stores, including Amazon Music, Apple Music, and participating music stores:
  • God of war
  • God of War II
  • God of War: Ghost of Sparta
  • Twisted Metal
  • Star Hawk
  • Unit 13

Shapes of fun. Created by the PlayStation design team, the new Shapes of Play collection gives you the power to create fun moments with our iconic shapes:

  • Game Shapes: Battle is a board game in which you can challenge a friend to arrange four different shapes of the same color on the board to win.
  • Game Shapes: Create is a set of magnetic blocks that can be placed in any direction to create fun shapes.
  • Game Shapes: Boost allows you to experience a new way of loading between games,

Shape of Play is expected to launch on December 24 and will be available for purchase via PlayStation Direct in the US, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Benelux.

Free Weekend for Online Multiplayer – That same weekend, we’ll be hosting a series of PS5 esports tournaments featuring NBA 2K24, NBA 2K25, Madden NFL 24, MLB The Show 24, EA UFC 5, Tekken 8, and Guilty Gear Strive. If you own any of these games and qualify, you can compete on September 21 and 22 to win a special 30th anniversary avatar and other in-game prizes. PS5 players can sign up via Game Hub or the PlayStation Tournaments button in-game. Stay tuned to compete.playstation.com for all the details on the upcoming tournaments.

What’s more, the studio even included a tidbit in the form of the 30th anniversary logo of the rumored PS5 Pro console:

If that’s not enough, the official PlayStation Instagram account just posted a story showing a direct image of the PS5 Pro console:

The design Sony showed off is in line with a report that surfaced last week that also pointed to a reveal this month. Another rumor from earlier this year hinted at its specs and that it would arrive this holiday season.

As for the 30th anniversary, I suspect there will also be a PlayStation Store sale to celebrate. If that happens, expect coverage on MP1st.
