On Friday, Uruguay will say goodbye to one of their best players when they host Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier.

Luis Suarez announced his retirement from international football this week, saying Friday’s match at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo would be his last of the season. La Celeste.

The 37-year-old will leave the team as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, having scored 69 goals in 142 appearances during his 17 years with the national team.

Suarez is likely to start, given that this is his farewell match, while Darwin Núñez, who usually starts, is one of several Uruguayan players who will be suspended for brawling with fans following the Copa América semi-final defeat to Colombia.

Still, Uruguay will be pleased with their chances of victory, as they started the World Cup qualifiers with a 4W-1D-1L record, good for second place in the standings.

Paraguay, meanwhile, have just five points from six matches and are coming off a disastrous Copa América campaign in which they lost all three group stage matches and were quickly eliminated.
