The Fashion Institute of Technology is widely recognized as a breeding ground for the world’s next-generation design talent. Yesterday afternoon, The Museum at FIT hosted its annual Couture Council Luncheon at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, presented by Nordstrom. The Council selected Simon Porte Jacquemus as this year’s winner of the Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion.

The French designer joins the ranks of Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, who have all received the prestigious distinction. The distinction is a mark of his exceptional design craftsmanship, as well as how his creations have captivated a loyal and mobile fan base.

“As an independent designer, I have always wanted to be innovative and creative in the design of my collections as well as in my communication,” said Jacquemus.

Joyce F. Brown, President of FIT, Pete Nordstrom, President and Chief Brand Officer of Nordstrom, and others such as Princess Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz, Founding Editor-in-Chief Vogue Arabia and founder of D’NA have reportedly expressed support for the museum and the laureate. The Couture board is made up of industry insiders, including Sarah Wetenhall, president and owner of The Colony Palm Beach.

They enable the museum to organize exhibitions, educate, and preserve its permanent collections, as well as to organize numerous free programs open to both FIT students and the general public.

Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch, inspiring speeches and special recognitions, all in the company of fashion stars like Meredith Marks and legendary designer Christian Cowan. Proceeds from the lunch will support future exhibitions, programs and symposia, which are free and open to the public.

“It’s always about connecting and creating experiences with our community in a unique way,” Jacquemus added. “I sincerely thank the Couture The Museum at FIT Board and Nordstrom for their wonderful support and this award.”
