Sony Announces Three New PlayStation Toys Exclusively for Megafans

If there’s one flaw that all the best PS5 games have in common, it’s that they’re all digital — you can’t interact with them outside of your TV screen. What a blessed relief that is Sony Announces Shapes of Play — a collection of three physical toys that definitely qualify you for “megafan” status if you can justify spending that much money on them.

Sony announces three Shapes of Play toys for December 2024

Announced on the PlayStation Blog and available for pre-order via PlayStation Direct. Game Shapes has been described as a “collection of products” that lets you play with iconic PlayStation symbols in new ways. All three Game Shapes toy sets will be available from Monday, December 9, 2024 exclusively via the Sony website.

The release of these three Game Shapes products coincide with the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, and all three differ in terms of interactivity, features, and price. So, to help you understand these upcoming Sony products, Here’s a breakdown of the three Shapes of Play toys.

Game shapes supercharge

• In short: Four PlayStation-themed stress relievers
• Price: $34.99 / £34.99 / €39.99

If you need to bend your arms after a long exercise, Elden’s Ring session, Game shapes supercharge offers four PlayStation-themed soft toys that you can squeeze. The price seems a bit eye-watering for a bunch of colorful dog toys, but that’s the price you pay for a PlayStation 30th Anniversary product, I guess.

Battle Game Shapes

• In short: With a PlayStation theme Connect 4
• Price: $44.99 / £44.99 / €49.99

Battle Game Shapes is the only one of the three products that we can safely call a “game” rather than a toy. Despite this, it’s a fairly simple game — basically a top-down version of the classic Connect 4 board game.

Two players take turns placing black or white acrylic PlayStation symbols on a small board, and the winner is the one who connects four of their color. It’s certainly a way to bring the PlayStation gaming experience offline, although once again I think I should point out the high price.

Game Shapes Create

• In short: PlayStation-themed magnetic blocks
• Price: $79.99 / £79.99 / €84.99

Shapes of Play Create features 13 magnetic wooden blocks that have been colored and themed around the original PlayStation symbols. Sony suggests lining them up to look like familiar symbols, or spreading them out to create fun shapes.

It’s a cool idea, but at nearly $80 it will remain a distant dream for anyone but the most die-hard PlayStation fans. For that price, you can buy a copy AstroBot and still have enough change to buy a really good PS5 game on sale. Sorry, Sony’s physical toys — the digital ones got the better of you this time.
