In a significant move to protect couples facing threats, the Rajasthan Police has introduced a ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ (SOP) to deal with applications filed by married couples and people in ‘close relationships’. The SOP, released on Saturday, aims to streamline the process of providing protection to couples facing threats, in line with an August 2 order of the Rajasthan High Court in Jaipur.

The new guidelines allow couples to file protection applications either on their own or through a representative or advocate. The initiative covers not only married couples but also people in close relationships who feel threatened. According to Additional Director General of Police (Civil Rights) Bhupendra Sahu, who issued the order, the aim of the SOP is to ensure timely and effective action on protection applications.

How couples can seek protection

According to the SOP, couples who feel threatened can file a protection application with the designated nodal officer of their district. The application can be filed in several ways, including:

  • By calling emergency numbers, e.g. 112 and the women’s hotline 1090.
  • By using the state level WhatsApp helpline (8764871150) or district level WhatsApp helpline.
  • Contact the Police Control Office or send an email to the district control office.

The SOP also requires that audio and video recordings of the applicant’s statements be made under CCTV surveillance.

Police actions and security measures

In addition, once a complaint is filed, the designated nodal officer is tasked with providing immediate temporary assistance to the couple. If the threat is deemed credible, the police will ensure the couple’s safety. If the request is not deemed sufficiently substantiated, the police are required to provide clear reasons for the refusal.
