“I’m Marrying My Former PE Teacher – My Schoolmates Still Call Her Miss”

“I’m Marrying My Former PE Teacher – My Schoolmates Still Call Her Miss”

When Scott Davies and Helen Booth first met in 2009, she was his teacher. Fast forward 15 years and they are now engaged.

Davies, 33, and Booth, 41, met in 2009 when he was a sixth-year pupil at Barclay School in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, where she taught PE.

Their paths crossed again 13 years later, in 2022, but initially neither of them suspected it could be a romantic relationship.

But they eventually fell in love, moved in together, and got engaged in August 2024 on a beach in Ibiza in front of a crowd of 200 people.

“It’s a bit of a turbulent story,” explains Davies, a primary school teacher from Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

“I never thought I would marry my former teacher, but we are very happy together.”

Although the pair did not keep in touch while Davies was at university, they became friends when he was 21 and he returned to his old school, where Booth was still working at the time, to coach cricket.

Later in 2022, they met again when Davies moved back to Stevenage from Birmingham in the West Midlands and contacted her again to ask her some questions about a teaching career.

But even then there was no romantic connection between them.

“At that point, everything was professional – we were just communicating,” Davies explains.

“I texted her to check on her and we decided to meet at a bar to talk.

“We had a drink, but then we thought: is this a date?”

The couple had a few more drinks and realized they had romantic potential.

“Then we spent another four days together,” he continues.

“Neither of us were actively looking for a partner at the time, but everything just sort of fell into place.”

Booth, who now works as a special educational needs co-ordinator at a secondary school, adds: “It was lovely how we got on straight away and how natural it was, we both thought it was ‘catching up’ at first but now we know it was our first date.”

Davies describes Booth as the teacher all the boys “were in love with” when they were at school.

“My colleagues were thrilled when they found out – they knew what a wonderful person Helen was,” he explains.

“It was interesting to meet my friends because they also studied with her.

“At first some of them still said ‘hi miss’ – it was quite funny – one of them still does it!”

Likewise, some of Helen’s friends are Scott’s former teachers.

“They were really happy for us,” he adds.

When the couple first met, Davies was initially afraid to tell his parents that Booth had tutored him.

“First I let my mom and dad meet her without saying anything, and then I said, ‘Oh, by the way, she taught me!’” he explains.

“Luckily, everyone got along well and my parents had no problem with that.

“Of course, it’s a pretty funny story – we never had any idea we’d end up together all these years.”

The future couple, who now live together in Shefford, Bedfordshire, plan to marry next year and hope to start a family.

“I feel very lucky with what we have in our relationship,” Booth adds. “It’s something very special and we bring a lot of joy to each other.”
