Syracuse is poised to replace 2,400 lead pipes carrying drinking water by 2025. Here’s the plan: Syracuse officials plan to replace 2,400 lead pipes next year that carry drinking water from the city’s water system to homes. These service pipes — called service lines — have historically been the responsibility of homeowners. But about 14,000 of those pipes in Syracuse contain lead. Because of public health concerns, the city is replacing them, which costs about $9,000 per line.

Study: Syracuse Police Should Not Supervise Crosswalk Wardens: A Syracuse police sergeant who oversees 85 crosswalk guards at schools found himself helping students across intersections Monday morning because two employees couldn’t get to work. For SPD Chief Joe Cecile, it was a frustrating but all-too-common use of an officer’s time. Removing crosswalk guards from the force — as well as other civilian positions, such as enforcing parking and city ordinances and checking business licenses — is one of the top recommendations from a staffing study released by the city auditor Monday.
