Sarah Burton Named Creative Director of Givenchy

Sarah Burton has been announced as the new creative director of Givenchy.

Burton, 50, stepped down from her previous position at the helm of Alexander McQueen in September 2023. Up until then, she had spent her entire career with the brand. Now, the British fashion designer is set to become the eighth designer to lead Givenchy, and only the second woman to ever hold the position. In an unexpected turn of events, Burton followed in the footsteps of her late mentor Lee McQueen, who served as Givenchy’s creative director from 1996 to 2001. At the time, Burton was hired at Alexander McQueen to support Lee as he split his time between the two brands.

We are announcing the nomination for WWDSidney Toledano, Chairman of Givenchy, said: “Sarah Burton is an exceptionally talented creative whose work I have passionately followed for many years. I am delighted that she is joining Givenchy today.”

Burton will present his first designs for Givenchy during Paris Fashion Week in March 2025.

Haider Ackermann has been given a new role as creative director at Tom Ford. The designer previously worked for three seasons at Berluti before taking a break from his eponymous brand in 2020. In recent years, Ackermann has guest-designed a collection for Jean Paul Gaulter and was named creative director of Canada Goose in May 2024.

In a statement announcing the news, Ackermann said: “It is with enormous pride that I will strive to honor the legacy of Tom Ford, a man I have long admired and for whom I have the utmost respect.”

Tom Ford himself, who stepped down from his label in 2023, shared similar excitement about the nomination.

“I have long been a huge fan of Haider’s work. I find his womenswear and menswear equally fascinating,” Ford said in a statement. “He is an incredible colorist, his tailoring is sharp, and above all, he is modern. We share many of the same historical references, and I can’t wait to see what he does with the brand.”

Like Burton, Ackermann will debut its first Huse collection in March 2025.
