Kathy Bates Calls Retirement Announcement a ‘Miscommunication’

After Kathy Bates New York Times interview was published on September 8, there was a stir about the 76-year-old actress’s alleged retirement plans. Now Misery the star claims it was all a simple misunderstanding.

The upcoming Matlock reboot may indeed be Kathy Bates’ “swan song,” as she said in an interview, but she hopes it will be a long one — “about eight more years,” she said. ETNischelle Turner at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 15.

Bates appeared on the red carpet alongside Matlock star Skye P. Marshall will discuss their upcoming show. Marshall, 39, enthusiastically joked that she wouldn’t let Titanic actress him. “I’ll drag her out of the house kicking and screaming if she thinks America or the world is going to let her retire,” Marshall said, drawing laughter from Bates.

“No, I think it was a misunderstanding, but I’m glad everyone was upset,” the Emmy and Oscar winner laughed.

Turner and Marshall briefly chanted, “No, no, she can’t go,” before Bates said how much she enjoyed working with Marshall and the cast. Matlock.

“We’re having a great time,” he said. Fried green tomatoes actress said of Marshall. “The chemistry is just great, we have a lot of fun.”

Marshall shared her co-star’s feelings, saying that despite Bates’ legendary status, it’s actually “very easy” to act opposite her. “She comes from such an honest place,” Marshall said. “When I’m present with her and just listening, the emotion comes, the pace, everything just falls into place naturally. So I feel at home with Kathy.”

Bates reiterated that she and Marshall were a “wonderful” couple on the CBS legal drama reboot. “I feel like we can just fly together,” she said.

Matlock Premieres September 22 on CBS and will be available on Paramount Plus.
