iOS 18.1 Brings 3D Photos to iPhone 15 Pro

Today’s iOS 18.1 beta 4 makes the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s camera even better with support for 3D photos. Apple announced 3D photos for the iPhone 16 series last week, but the feature also came to last year’s flagships.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have supported spatial video recording since their release last year. However, in iOS 18.1, users will find a dedicated “Spatial” option in the Camera app to easily switch between recording spatial video and taking spatial photos. Apple explains:

Record 3D photos and videos with incredible depth for viewing in the Photos app on Apple Vision Pro. For best results, hold iPhone in landscape orientation and steady while recording. Video is recorded at 30 fps at 1080p resolution. A minute of 3D video is about 130 MB. A 3D photo is about 5 MB.

The 3D photos and 3D videos can then be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro. It’s worth noting that visionOS 2 was released this week, which lets users create 3D photos directly from any image in their library.

iOS 18.1 is currently available in beta for developers. During last week’s iPhone 16 event, Apple confirmed that iOS 18.1 and the first Apple Intelligence features will debut in October.
