This is what Dolly Parton and her sister Rachel sing while cooking

When asked if she sings in the kitchen, Dolly Parton replied that it was a “dumb” question.

“It’s just part of it,” Parton tells TODAY.com. “I remember my mom would sing all the time when she was cooking, and she was always singing anyway, so we just took it over.”

The country legend says Parton’s entire family — including her 11 siblings — grew up loving to sing and still harmonize around the stove to this day. One favorite is the 1951 hit “Hey, Good Lookin’,” a classic country song by Hank Williams.

“We were singing, ‘Hey, handsome, what are you cooking?’” Parton says. “How about cooking something with me?”

On September 17, the 10-time Grammy Award winner and her sister Rachel Parton George celebrate the release of their collaborative cookbook, Good Lookin’ Cookin’: A Year of Meals.

The book, titled after their shared meals, will feature more than 80 recipes, including country ham and cookies, barbecued ribs, “Slaw of Many Colors” (get it?), and more. It will also include tips for hosting holiday parties and creating memories like theirs.

The sisters say food was a big part of their upbringing — some of their fondest memories involve dinner at the table. In fact, some of the recipes they grew up with ended up in the cookbook.

“We usually had chicken and dumplings or fried chicken,” Parton George tells TODAY.com of her childhood meals in East Tennessee. “It was always something that everyone in the family loved, that’s what I remember.”

“I think there was something about Sundays and fried chicken — even in the country — that was just a special treat,” Parton says, adding that while the dish wasn’t reserved for Sundays, it was always made when the pastor came to visit.

“Our grandfather was the preacher in our family, and my grandfather loved fried chicken,” Parton says with a laugh. “But he always considered Sunday to be his special day, even though he ate with us at different times.”

Home Chef will be adding several of Parton’s recipes to its menu for a limited time.

Parton’s next business venture is Also a family affair. Along with the release of the cookbook, meal delivery service Home Chef will add several of the couple’s recipes to its menu for a limited time.

The dishes, which will be delivered in special packaging inspired by the cookbook, are:

  • Week of September 30: Fried Chicken in Sauce with Mashed Potatoes Dolly & Rachel

  • Week of September 30: A family favorite, meat pie with green beans from the South

  • Week of October 7: Beef tenderloin with blue cheese butter, baked potatoes and broccoli

  • Week of October 7: Country-fried trout with purple and white salad

  • Week of October 14: Grilled chicken breast with spicy mayonnaise and corn

“I ordered some of my own,” Parton says. “We don’t have time to cook every day, so this is a great way to enjoy your own food.”

To celebrate the partnership, Home Chef is offering 18 free meals and free shipping to new customers who use the code “GETCOOKIN.”

The meal prep kit service is also offering a chance to win a $150 gift card and a copy of “Good Lookin’ Cookin'” — people can enter the contest by tagging their favorite cooking partner in the comments of a Home Chef Instagram post from September 18 to October 18.

“I think we just grew up in a family of love and respect, and we didn’t have anything that money could buy, so we learned to feel rich because of the love and understanding and care that we felt in our family,” Parton says of the decades the Partons spent together. “We feel like we were lucky in this world. God was good to us, very good.”

“When you have a best friend as a sister, a best friend who you cook with, who is there for you — that means everything,” Parton tells George. Her sister — who seems moved by the sentiment — adds, “I second that sentiment.”
