Diving Insight:

Spring took the helm of Macy’s Inc. earlier this year but immediately faced a controversial takeover bid from real estate-minded investors eager to cash in on the company’s substantial real estate holdings.

The drama didn’t die down until Macy’s famous Independence Day fireworks were over: In mid-July, the department store ended talks with potential potential buyers for a $6.9 billion offer and canceled the deal.

This year’s fireworks were broadcast on Peacock, Holzman’s previous employer. Otterman herself arrived in December from Caesars Entertainment; she also previously worked at NBCUniversal.

The company noted that Holzman’s role was “designed to lead impactful, groundbreaking new campaigns and deliver more integrated storytelling across all channels” and that she will “evolve how Macy’s engages with customers and the public.”

In a statement, Otterman said she was “excited to continue adding talented, creative professionals to our world-class marketing organization,” adding that Holzman “has a proven track record of innovative storytelling” with experience in consumer advertising and the media and entertainment industries.

“Macy’s has a rich history of celebrating moments big and small, and we’ve hired a talented storyteller to continue telling our story,” she said.
