At the beginning of each school year, there is a club fair. With so many options, it can be difficult for students to find a club that fits their interests. However, students with a passion for science and engineering may find interest in the rocket team. The rocket team, located in the Engineering Garage, works on building rockets to compete in various events and challenges.

The team, which consists of 50 to 60 people, is always looking for new members. Nico McCann, the leader of the Propulsion team, says the app is not just for engineering students.

“If you’re someone who likes to code, we can give you a project to see how proficient you are and whether you can help the team. Just because you’re on the team doesn’t mean you’re building it,” McCann said.

The Rocketry Team also provides hands-on experience that benefits student projects by bringing a variety of knowledge to the table. That was the case for McCann, who is an engineering student in addition to his rocketry duties.

“I probably learned more from the rocket team than I could have learned in class,” he said.

While there are many academic benefits, there is more to gain than just knowledge.Speed School requires three internships, so for McCann, having the rocket team on his resume opens up more internship opportunities. When it comes to those internships, the rocket team provides great project examples in photo form.

“It’s a built-in benefit because you know how a rocket is built, so you can easily explain it to interviewers,” McCann said. “They usually have a list of pre-set questions, but showing them photos can give you questions tailored to your strengths.”
