“The accused had duped over 50 women on the pretext of marriage through matrimonial websites, posing as a senior government official. He was involved in such cases in various states and was searched by police from various states,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Kumar Sain.

The police officer said the anti-extortion and kidnapping squad and crime branch had started collecting information about Khan, who was wanted by police from various states.

Information was received that Khan would come to Delhi from Vadodra, he added.

“The team laid a trap and arrested him from Nizamuddin railway station. Khan was interrogated where he revealed his involvement and revealed his modus operandi,” the DCP said.

Police said he had defrauded several women, including high-profile ones, on the pretext of marriage by creating multiple fake profiles with attractive descriptions on various matrimonial websites.

He revealed that he had once courted unmarried women, widows and divorcees, trying to gain their favour.

According to police, after gaining the women’s trust, he began cheating on them.

They claim he met their families to talk about marriage and defrauded them by extorting money for booking a resort, wedding hall or hotel.

“Most of the women he cheated on were divorced,” DCP said, adding that he got married in 2014 and has three children.

Police said he took expensive items such as cash, mobile phones and jewellery from women in order to marry them.

His victims include influential women from the same community, including a court official, they say.

“Fewer cases are registered against him in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. A total of five cases have resulted in his arrest,” the DCP told PTI
