On Tour, David Spade Talks SNL and ‘Grown Ups 3’ Possibilities Ahead of Providence Show

“I’ll tell you, once every 10 years something comes in handy if you want to get work and have any significance,” the 60-year-old comedian says dispassionately.

Spade and I talked about his podcast with “SNL” colleague Dana Carvey (“Fly on the Wall” focuses on “SNL”; “Superfly” focuses on general pop culture), his close friend and comedian Chris Farley, and even the possibility of a “Grown Ups 3.” On Saturday, he’ll perform his new show, “Catch Me Inside,” at The Vets in Providence.

Tell me about the program you will bring to Rhode Island.

I don’t know much about Rhode Island, like most people (laughter). That’s a good reason to go there. I said, “I want to see different parts of the country and see if I’m famous everywhere.”

Are you flying to Boston?

I’ve done three movies in Boston. I always have a great time. I do a private corporate event in Boston. I think the people who grew up on my movies and SNL are now CEOs. They’re like, “Hey, let’s get this guy in.” And of course I run in like a clown. “Can I juggle for your kids?”

You told me the Providence show is “tuned” and that this is the version you’ll be recording for your special. Is that on Netflix?

It will be something unnamed. Can I be more vague? I don’t think I can say that and I don’t know why.

It’s a Big Year for Your Fly on the Wall Podcast in celebration of the 50th anniversary of “SNL.”

It’s interesting with the 50s, it’s just cooler. Some people know I was on “SNL,” some don’t. Most people know Dana was. Dana, I would say, is in the top ten on “SNL.” That’s a big thing to say.

We were lucky to get our favorites. Michael Che and Colin Jost, we just did them. There are a few more — Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Jane Curtin — that I want to talk to.

You had Maya Rudolph. This year, she’ll play Vice President Kamala Harris on “SNL.”

I love Maya. We’re pretty close, actually. She always leaves funny voicemails. She’s gonna be great.

You mentioned Dan — who else is in your top ten?

I think we’ll do a competition on the podcast: best hosts, best cast members. The cast is interesting because people usually remember the cast from when they were in middle school or high school. That sounds crazy.

This is so apt.

Because you saw something that you probably shouldn’t have seen, a little rougher around the edges. You’re like (imitates “Beavis and Butthead”) “Heh heh. They said the wrong word.”

That’s true. It’s an interesting combination. What are your all-time favorite sketches?

Chris (Farley) has been in a few of them — “Japanese Game Show” is underrated. “Cowbell.” “Coneheads.” “Debbie Downer” with Lindsay Lohan. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I’d have to think about it. Sometimes you see something like that and you’re like, “This is going to stay.” Like Ryan Gosling in “Beavis and Butthead.”

You were close to Farley.

We were together 24/7 — between “SNL,” our first movie. We had a blast. “SNL” meant everything to us. I talk to Adam (Sandler) and (Chris) Rock every day. “SNL” was my college. Because I didn’t spend much time in college — I was too addicted to stand-up, so I dropped out of college for stand-up.

You also have cult films. Which ones have the biggest cult fan base?

“Grown Ups,” “Joe Dirt,” and “Tommy Boy.” Some guy stopped me in the hallway yesterday and talked about “Tommy Boy” for five minutes. I can’t be mad because it was such a happy coincidence.

Someone said, “I know your career all the way back to ‘Growing Up.’ I thought, ‘Shit, is this the furthest corner of your mind?'”

Will there be a “Grown Ups 3”?

(sings) “Adults 3!” I think so. I mean, we talk about it all the time.

You’ll star in Jonah Hill’s “Outcome.” This cast is amazing.

Jonah called and said, “Would you like to do something with Keanu (Reeves)?” I said, “A thousand percent. I want to hang out with the coolest guy in the world.”

I know you’re a big fantasy football fan. Are there any Patriots in your fantasy league?

I have my eye on a certain running back. I haven’t made any sudden moves, but he’ll be happy to know I’m watching him (laughter).
