Why Taylor Swift Thinks First Impressions Don’t Matter That Much in Relationships

Why Taylor Swift Thinks First Impressions Don’t Matter That Much in Relationships

First impressions “aren’t everything” in Taylor Swift’s eyes. The Grammy winner once explained what she considers to be much “more valuable” in a relationship than making a “cute” first impression. Plus, how she handles first impressions, according to her boyfriend’s friend Travis Kelce. And how Jason Kelce’s “worst first impression” convinced her.

Taylor Swift Believes A Person’s ‘Layers’ Are ‘More Valuable’ Than First Impressions

In a 2019 Elle magazine article titled 30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30, Swift, now 34, shared why first impressions aren’t all that important to her. “First impressions aren’t really everything,” she wrote, noting that she prefers to “get to know someone.”

“It’s impressive when someone can charm people right away and take over a room,” she continued. “But now I know that what’s more valuable about a person isn’t their charming post-meeting routine (I call it the ‘solid first 15’) but the layers of that person you discover over time.”

“Are they honest, self-aware, and slyly funny at the moments you least expect them to be? Do they show up for you when you need them? Do they still love you when they see you’re broken? Or when they walked in, when you talk to your cats like they’re people? These are the things that first impressions could never convey.”

While she doesn’t put much stock in first impressions, Swift is good at it, Kelce’s friend, an NFL player turned WWE wrestler, told Us Weekly. Baron Corbin, who remained friends with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, recalled the “Down Bad” singer’s friendly greeting.

“He’s just a friend. So you don’t think, ‘Hey, is Taylor going to be there?’ You don’t want to ask or anything. (She’s) obviously one of the biggest stars on the planet. And when you meet her, you think, ‘Oh, she’s so nice, so down-to-earth.'”

“If you lived under a rock and had no idea who Taylor Swift was,” he added, “you would just think she was an amazing person.”

She ‘absolutely loved’ Jason Kelce’s shirtless first impression

Despite warnings from his wife Kylie Kelce to be on his “best behavior,” retired Philadelphia Eagles tight end Jason Kelce was himself when he met his younger brother’s girlfriend.

Jason took off his shirt while celebrating the Chiefs game before meeting fans. Kelce family matriarch Donna Kelce wasn’t surprised, telling People at the time that she knew, despite her daughter-in-law’s instructions to “make a good impression” on Swift, “it wasn’t going to happen.”

“Jason is independent, just like Travis, and once they decide to do something, there’s no room for them,” she said. “(Your) best first impression is the worst impression ever,” Kelce later told Jason on the “New Heights” podcast. Ultimately, it all worked out because “Tay said she absolutely loves you.”
