Green Night Director Han Shuai on Collaborating with Fan Bingbing on a Feminist Neo-Noir Thriller

Green Night is based on the director Han Shuaiobserving the plight of women in the Chinese coastal town where she grew up, on the border with South Korea near Incheon Airport, and came up with the idea for a neo-noir crime film starring women. She spoke with Fan Bingbing about playing the lead role of a Chinese immigrant who falls in love with a Korean woman, in order to explore how women are perceived in Asian society. “We started working together because we both wanted to make a film with two very different women in the same frame. Fan Bingbing once told me about her reaction to watching Blue is the warmest color,“Han said. “The film made her think about the prospect of acting opposite another woman, creating a unique kind of on-screen chemistry. She believed it would give her the opportunity to experiment with different acting techniques. Fan Bingbing, known for portraying beautiful women in the eyes of men, had previous on-screen partners who were men. Working with Li Yu, she realized she could be more authentic working with a female director.”

There has been a slow trend of crime films with horror elements in China over the past decade, but it is rare to find a neo-noir thriller starring women Green Night and by a female director (though the country has its share of female directors). Really, that should be more normal than it seems these days. New York distributor Film Movement will release the film on VOD in the U.S. on October 18.
