Sophie Turner says being a mother helped with scenes in new ITV drama

Sophie Turner has spoken about how being a mother helped her film emotional scenes in upcoming ITV drama Joan.

This Game of Thrones The star will play diamond thief Joan Hannington in the new six-part series, which will premiere later this month.

The catalyst that led Joan to a life of crime came when her daughter Kelly (Mia Millichamp-Long) was placed in foster care until Joan could find her way financially.

The film’s plot consists of emotional scenes set in social services as Joan first places her daughter in care and then fights to get her out of the system.

Turner opened up about preparing for the emotionally intense scenes during a Q&A with the cast and creators to promote the new series.

She said Digital spy and other media: “I’m a Pisces. Very emotional. But I listen to music and stuff like that.

“I’m a mother, everything to do with children, and it just flows out of me.”

Turner has two daughters, Delphine and Willa, whom she shares parenting with her ex-husband Joe Jonas.

She went on to talk about Joan’s relationship with her daughter Kelly as a “pivot point” in the entire drama.

“While we were shooting scenes that Kelly wasn’t in, (director Richard Laxton) would always come up to me in almost every scene and say, ‘Where’s Kelly?’” Turner said.

“So it was a constant, constant, constant reminder of why she was doing this. Because I think sometimes when you do a show like this that’s a binge and there’s diamonds and glitz, you get swept up in it all.

“You have to remember that this is about providing a solid and stable life for her daughter so that she can get her back. It’s a really heartbreaking story, so we had to constantly remind ourselves of that to keep the balance and not get too excited.”

Joan airs its first episode on ITV1 on September 29, with all six episodes available on ITVX following the first episode. The drama will air on The CW in the US.
