DU suspends 8 students for involvement in Tofazzal’s murder

Dhaka University authorities have suspended eight students for their alleged involvement in the killing of Tofazzal Hossain, two days after he was lynched in a university hostel.

The decision was revealed in a press release published today (September 21).

The expelled students included three former leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League – Jalal Ahmed, former deputy secretary for science and technology of the organisation, Ahsan Ullah, former secretary for mass communication and development, and BCL office secretary Al Hossain Sajjad, a student of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

The other expelled students are: Mohammad Sumon from the Department of Soil, Water and Environment; Muttakin Sakin from the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Md Firoz Kabir from the Department of Botany and two students from the Department of Physics: Md Abdus Samad and Wazibul Alam.

Six of the eight accused — Jalal Mia, Mohammad Suman, Ahsan Ullah, Muttakin Sakin, Al Hossain Sajjad and Wazibul Alam — have already been arrested.

The University of Dhaka authorities also announced that the Vice-Chancellor of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall has been dismissed and a new Vice-Chancellor has been appointed in his place.
