One Book, One San Diego Choice for 2024

Celebrate your freedom to read with One Book, One San Diego, a community-led program that celebrates the power of literature to inspire, unite, and spark meaningful conversations.

By encouraging everyone to read and discuss the same book, we celebrate diverse voices, discover new perspectives, and “bring our community closer together through the shared experience of reading.” Presented by KPBS in partnership with over 80 public libraries, service organizations, and educational institutions, join us on this literary journey.

Know my name is required reading for its courage and honesty. Join us at the La Mesa Library on Wednesday, October 16th at 1:00 PM to discuss this powerful title.

We will read for teenagers Victory. Halt! The inspiring true story of Tommie Smith, an Olympic athlete who raised his fist in protest at the 1968 Olympics.

Co-authored by Derrick Barnes and illustrated by Dawud Anyabwile, the memoir follows Smith’s journey from a childhood spent in rural Texas to his illustrious athletic career, and how his iconic gesture became a symbol of resistance and courage on the world stage.

This year’s selection is an inspiring read for anyone interested in civil rights and sports history. Teens can discuss Victory. Halt! on Tuesday, October 15, at 4:00 PM at the La Mesa Library.

The creation of the district by María Dolores Águila with illustrations by Magdalena Mora is this year’s selection of beautiful illustrated books for children.

The creation of the district tells the story of a courageous young activist and her neighbors during a 12-day protest in the community of Barrio Logan in San Diego. Residents united to reclaim their land and preserve their cultural identity, resulting in the creation of a vibrant Chicano Park. Through the words of María Dolores Águila and the vibrant illustrations of Magdalena Mora, the book captures the spirit of resistance and unity that built this historic park.
