Powerlifting Fiji is preparing to send two to four athletes to the upcoming Oceania Championships taking place in Nauru next month.

President Viliame Lagonilakeba says the federation faces the challenge of providing athletes with adequate equipment and training facilities as many have had to adapt and learn on the fly.

Even though there are many talented athletes in the country, due to financial problems it is difficult to send them abroad to promote themselves.

However, Lagonilakeba says there is hope that financial support will be secured to enable them to participate.

“The only events we have been able to send our athletes to are the Pacific Games and we do not feel that this is enough to provide our athletes with the standard exposure. We have been pleading with the relevant authorities for funds and we hope that we can get some luck for Oceania.”

Meanwhile, a total of 22 national records were broken during the National Powerlifting Championships, organised by the Fiji Powerlifting Federation, last weekend at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre.

Eleven records were broken during the competition among both men and women, demonstrating the growing level of talent in the sport.

The Oceania Championships will be held from October 30 to November 2.
