Angelina Jolie reveals she got matching tattoos with her 16-year-old daughter

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she and her 16-year-old daughter Vivienne have matching tattoos.

In an interview with CR Fashion Book, the 49-year-old actress revealed that she and Vivienne recently got the tattoo to honor The Outsiders, the Broadway musical the mother and daughter worked on together.

“I won ‘Stay Gold’ with my daughter Viv during our time on ‘The Outsiders,’” Jolie said. “It means so much to us, separately and together.”

The Oscar winner first showed off the tattoo in April on the red carpet at the premiere of “The Outsiders,” which she attended with Vivienne. “Stay Gold” is written in black script on her left forearm, among several other tattoos. Speaking to CR Fashion Book, Jolie did not specify where Vivienne got the tattoo.

“The Outsiders” is based on the 1967 book of the same name by S. E. Hinton and the 1983 film adaptation by Francis Ford Coppola and starring C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio and Diane Lane.

“Stay Gold” is a famous quote from the book and film. It refers to a line from the Robert Frost poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” “Stay Gold” is also a song from the musical “The Outsiders.”

Jolie told the outlet that she also shares a matching bird tattoo with some of her children, saying that the ink is “personal to us.” However, the actress did not reveal which of her children also have a bird tattoo.

In addition to Vivienne and her twin brother Knox, Jolie and her ex-husband Brad Pitt share two sons Maddox, 23 years old and Pax, 20, and daughters Zahara, 19, and Shiloh, 18.

At the Tony Awards in June 2024, Jolie showed off a tattoo of a small bird on her chest, though it’s unclear if it’s the same tattoo she spoke about in her interview with CR Fashion Book.

Jolie worked as a producer on “Stranger” while Vivienne was billed as an assistant producer. “The Outsiders,” directed by Danya Taymor, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, winning four, including best new musical.

The “Maleficent” star’s role as a producer on the musical meant she was one of the winners for best new musical – her first Tony. Jolie and Vivienne walked the red carpet together at the Tony Awards, wearing matching turquoise outfits.

Jolie previously told how Vivienne inspired her to produce a Broadway adaptation of the musical The Outsiders after seeing the production multiple times at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego.

“My daughter Viv loves theater,” Jolie told Deadline in June. “She appreciates all theater, but she definitely knows what she’s close to and what she responds to. She’s seen The Outsiders in La Jolla about five times and told me about it, and I read the book and saw the movie years ago.”

Jolie recalled that Vivienne invited her to see the play with her, and she began to understand why the play had made such a great impression on her daughter.

“Danya talks about how important it is for teenagers, like it was written by someone who’s my daughter’s age, right?” Jolie told the outlet. “So, really, as a mother, as a person, I watched it, but I really watched the impact it had on my young daughter and what she was telling me about herself and finding out what was important to her about it and why it connected so deeply with her.”

She continued: “So it was a completely different experience of understanding how that has a significant impact on her as a young person right now, and she conveys something to me, and that’s the power of this material, which was in really good shape even then.”

“And then I had the privilege of watching everyone work on this last year to make it what it is, and Vivienne was there the whole time.”

In an interview with CR Fashion Book, Jolie talked about what her children have taught her.

“There are too many to count or name just one,” she said. “But the moment you become a parent, you are no longer the first. Your life is for someone else. It’s a beautiful feeling.”
