Richardson police release video of chase that ended in suspect’s suicide

Richardson police released dashcam footage Saturday of a police chase and officer-involved shooting earlier this week that ended with the suspect committing suicide.

Police said Tuesday that officers were notified that a vehicle had been spotted in connection with a homicide in Kaufman County. Richardson police attempted to conduct a traffic stop shortly after 3:30 p.m., but the vehicle sped off, police said.

During the chase, the suspect fired at officers, and one of them returned fire, police said. The chase ended in the 13100 block of North Central Expressway in Dallas.

When officers approached the vehicle, they found a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A female passenger was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound that police said was inflicted by the driver. Three children — ages 5, 15 and 17 — were found unharmed in the back seat.

The male suspect died at the scene, police said. Officials had not released his name as of Saturday, and there is no matching case listed on the Dallas County Medical Examiner website.

In the video released Saturday, a suspect vehicle drives past a police car at an intersection. The police car chases the vehicle as it weaves through other cars. The officer can be heard telling dispatchers that the speed of the chase was about 90 miles per hour.

The officer also ordered dispatchers to notify Dallas police about the pursuit.

The vehicle then makes a left turn onto Esperanza Road. In the 13600 block of Esperanza, glass can be seen popping out of the vehicle’s rear window as the officer tells dispatch he’s being shot at. The video shows two shots fired from the suspect’s vehicle.

As the suspect and officer reach a stop sign leading onto the access road to the highway, the officer fires eight shots at the vehicle, piercing the windshield of the patrol car. Two cars are in front of and to the left of the patrol car when the officer shoots, and one car can be seen driving near the suspect vehicle on the access road when the officer shoots.

The officer then informs dispatch that he shot the suspect with a rifle. The pursuit continues as the suspect’s vehicle pulls onto the grass by the access road and comes to a stop.

Helicopter footage then shows officers performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the suspect.

In connection with the incident that occurred in Dallas, the Dallas Police Department is investigating the incident, along with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. Richardson police said that, in accordance with department policy, the officer who fired the shots is on leave.
