URGENT: Tensions Rise in Edo as INEC Announces When It Will Resume Collation of Election Results

Benin City, Edo State – Tensions rose at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the early hours of Sunday, September 22, forcing INEC to postpone the final collation of the 2024 Edo State governorship election results to 10:00 a.m.

INEC made the announcement in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 22, at its headquarters in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, which also serves as the final signature collection centre.

Anugbum Omuoha, the Permanent Electoral Commissioner (REC), promised that the vote collation process would be completely transparent.

The INEC statement reads as follows:

“We hereby inform the general public, stakeholders and observers that the collation of results of the ongoing governorship election in Edo State will resume today, Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

“We appreciate the parties’ patience and cooperation as we work to ensure a credible and accurate outcome to this important election.”

Legit.ng reports that INEC’s announcement came hours after voting officially closed in 4,519 polling units in Edo on Saturday, September 21.

Although many expected the commission to begin announcing results from the 18 local government units at the counting center in Benin City, concrete activities could be observed there on Saturday evening, September 21.
