‘Beetlejuice’ Beats ‘Transformers: One’ at Box Office in Surprising Twist

Say his name three times because he just won the weekend box office.

“Beetlejuice,” Tim Burton’s sequel to the 1988 horror film, topped the box office charts for the third year in a row, earning an estimated $26 million at the box office.

The film beat out the weekend’s new release: “Transformers: One,” the animated origin story of Optimus Prime starring Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson, which earned $25 million.

Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice,” starring Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, debuted three weeks ago and grossed $110 million, and has since grossed more than $226 million in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Transformers: One” has had excellent reviews and even awards buzz, but fans on social media were “confused about the film’s animated status.” The outlet added that Paramount, the studio behind the film, hopes the film will stay in theaters for the next few weeks.

James McAvoy’s horror thriller “Speak No Evil” finished third at the box office with $5.9 million in its second week for a total of $21.5 million.

Rounding out the top five were Halle Berry’s horror film “Never Let Go” in fourth place with $4.5 million, while Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” earned $3.9 million in its ninth weekend in theaters.

The box office was also heavily influenced by the much-panned horror film starring Demi Moore, The Substance, which came in sixth with $3.1 million and was released on only a limited number of screens in its first weekend.

“Am I a Racist?” in which conservative columnist Matt Walsh goes under the guise of a “DEI practitioner” – came in seventh with $2.9 million.

“Reagan,” starring Dennis Quaid, “Jung Kook: I am Still” and “The Alien from Romulus” all landed in the top ten box office grossers.
