Westlake Alumni Hall of Fame Welcomes Eight New Members

While current Westlake High School students celebrate homecoming the week of September 30-October 7, the Westlake Alumni Association will celebrate the achievements of graduates as eight new inductees will be inducted into the Westlake Alumni Hall of Fame.

The graduation ceremony and gala dinner will be held on October 3, at 5:30 p.m. at the LaCentre Banquet Facility, 25777 Detroit Road, Westlake.

“The Westlake Hall of Fame was established in 1991,” Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Leitch said in an email. “We have 80 members in this year’s class. People are nominated. The Westlake Hall of Fame is unique in that it has three categories. Athletes — teams or individuals who excelled in sports during their high school careers. Outstanding — individuals who brought honor to Westlake High School after graduation through their professional endeavors. Honorary — to recognize teachers, coaches, administrators or community leaders who have contributed to making Westlake City Schools a great school system.”

This year’s members Among the distinguished members are: Wendy Shiba (class of 1968): As a student scientist in high school, she participated in numerous activities, including Yearbook. A graduate of Temple University Law School, she continued her career as a lawyer and executive for several major corporations. She has received numerous awards from the American Bar Association and is an advocate for women and diversity.

Will Ryan (class of 1967): He formed a local Cleveland comedy duo called Willio & Phillio. He later went to Hollywood where he made a career. Ryan lent his voice to short animated projects including Disney’s Willie the Giant, Winnie the Pooh’s Day for Eeyore, and the Oscar-nominated animated feature Mickey’s Christmas Carol. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy as part of Nickelodeon’s The World of Dr. Seuss, and won two Gold Records as part of Cactus County Cowboys. He died at the age of 72 in 2021.

Jenni Meno-Sand (class of 1989): She was a world-class pair skater with her partner and now husband Todd Sand. The pair were U.S. pairs champions from 1994 to 1996; silver medalists at the 1998 World Championships; and competed in three Olympic Games (1992, 1994, and 1998). They are also members of the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

The members of the sports category are: Ron Laraway (class of 1979): A multi-sport athlete, he averaged 25 points per game in his final basketball season and was named the Southwestern Conference (SWC) Most Valuable Player (MVP) as well as All-State. He graduated as the all-time single-season points leader. In addition to basketball, Laraway was a standout in football and was an All-SWC point guard who later played at North Carolina State.

Frank Frostino (class of 1991). The football star was named SWC MVP, All-State and High School All-American. He went on to excel at Bowling Green State University and was a Mid-American Conference athlete. He played professionally for the Canton Invaders.

Kelsey Fenix ​​Cameron (Class of 2004). A multi-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and softball, she earned multiple SWC All-Conference honors, All-Ohio, and was a High School All-American in her senior year. She then played soccer at the University of Kentucky. She is currently the head women’s soccer coach at Belmont University.

Lauren Golick (class of 2013). The standout tennis player (129-14 record) was the Girls Tennis state champion her senior year. She was named Plain Dealer Player of the Year three times. She attended Cleveland State University.

1982-1983 Girls Basketball Team, under the leadership of coach Bill Shollenberger (the first girls basketball coach in program history) will be honored this year. The team played in the State Final 4 in 1983, the furthest any basketball team has traveled in school history. The team went 24-3 in the 1982-83 season, led by six seniors, and averaged 64 points per game while giving up only 37 points per game.
