Queensland dad discovers .5million Gold Lotto win after watching his NRL team lose

A footy fan who returned home from his holiday disappointed after watching his beloved NRL team lost discovered he’d won $2.5million several days later.

The Bundaberg dad from Queensland’s Wide Bay region had traveled down to Brisbane to cheer on the Broncos in their final game of the season against Melbourne Storm earlier this month and purchased a Saturday Gold Lotto entry along the way.

He had no idea he had one of four winning division one tickets until almost two weeks after the September 7 draw.

‘Woo-hoo! We’re so frigging excited,’ the shocked winner told the Lott.

‘My wife and I were in Red Rooster getting some dinner last night because we were too tired to cook and while we were there my wife decided to check my ticket,’

‘My wife started to get really excited, and I looked over her shoulder to see what the prize was, and I thought I’d won $42.

‘I started to get excited over a win of $42 because it was more than what my wife had won which was $3.20, but then she told me to look again, and turned out I was looking at the cost of the ticket.

‘I couldn’t believe it. We went crazy.’

The dad said the win was a massive pickup following the Broncos’ disappointing 50-12 loss against the minor premiers to end their season.

‘The game brought tears to my eyes. I thought it was a disappointing trip because they didn’t win but turned out it was the best trip ever,’ he said.

‘I only ever buy lottery tickets when I’m away from home because I always hear about people winning when they’re on holidays and look what’s happened.’

The hard-working small business owner plans to use the windfall to buy his daughters a home and put some funds aside for retirement.

The ticket was purchased from Nextra Express Chermside just weeks after it sold the winning $100 million Powerball entry.

‘If we’re not the luckiest store in Brisbane this year, I can’t imagine who could be! We’re so pleased to have sold another division one winning entry to one of our customers,’ owner Shannon Hickey said.

‘Ever since we’ve sold the mammoth $100 million winning entry in a recent Powerball draw, we’ve had customers come in for a chat and to take a selfie with our poster.’
