REC and Sila reach multi-year silane agreement after REC announced first delivery

MOSES LAKE – REC Silicon announced that it has entered into an agreement with Sila Nanotechnologies under which REC will supply Sila with silane gas for the production of Sila’s proprietary Titan Silicon anode material.

“We appreciate the opportunity to support Sila and their next-generation battery materials,” said Kurt Levens, CEO of REC Silicon. “This agreement demonstrates the growing demand for high-purity silicon materials in the clean energy sector, and we are confident that our collaboration will play a key role in accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and underscore the benefits of working with an experienced, reliable and consistent silane producer.”

The agreement is set to run through 2031 and will allow Sila to deliver its product to automotive customers from the fourth quarter of 2025 onwards. Sila has agreements with Mercedes-Benz and Panasonic, as well as three additional customers it is not ready to publicly announce. Those customers will be serviced by Sila’s Moses Lake facility.

“Our agreement with REC Silicon is a key step in securing the raw materials needed to deliver Titan SiliconTM to our automotive customers over the long haul,” said Gene Berdichevsky, co-founder and CEO of Sila. “It also represents the importance of ensuring domestic production and supply of a critical next-generation material to support America’s leadership in clean energy.”

As announced, the agreement will provide Sila with a domestic supply of gas, which is a scarce but key ingredient in the production of anode materials.

The announcement comes after REC issued a press release announcing the first scheduled shipment of its ultra-high-purity polysilicon from its Moses Lake high-purity silane-based pellet manufacturing facility. The shipment is expected to ship in mid-October after meeting customer quality verification requirements.

“Getting to this point and mitigating the previous contamination issue has been the result of hard work by many dedicated employees within the company. We will soon begin a new phase for the facility, where efforts will shift toward continuous quality improvement to exceed market standards, ramp up and optimize,” Levens said in a press release.

The shipment was shipped after a series of process modifications that addressed contamination issues in early batches of product. The modifications resolved the issue, and the product now meets customer REC specifications.

REC’s Moses Lake facility is complete, including the Silane IV facility, and equipment will be brought online in the new portion of the facility as production increases. The press release indicated that the facility is operating well and producing sufficient quantities for commercial supply.
