During the discussion about his hearings for Laal Singh ChaddhaAamir mentioned earlier, Junaid Khan revealed that though his father liked the audition, the film’s budget constraints made it difficult to cast the newcomer in the lead role. Junaid said, “Isliye mujhe nahin mauka mila woh film karne ka… But I will also admit that if I wasn’t Aamir Khan’s son, I probably wouldn’t have gotten the Maharaj.”

The film is directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra and produced by YRF Entertainment. Maharaj tells the story of the historic 1862 Maharaja defamation case, and also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari. The historical drama was temporarily shelved when the Gujarat High Court intervened following a petition by members of the Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect, who raised concerns about the film’s portrayal of religious beliefs.

On June 21, the Supreme Court lifted the suspension, finding that Maharaj is not directed against the Vaishnav Pushtimarg sect, which allows the film to be released on Netflix on the same day. Siddharth then spoke exclusively to Pinkvilla and said, “Natmastak pranam for the judiciary so that they can see it and judge it for what it is and what our intentions were.”

Siddhrath added, “I am really thankful to the judiciary for allowing the film to release and saying that there is nothing offensive in it. I really hope people give it a fair chance because the film has been made with a lot of love. If you don’t like it, fine. Opinions are taken into consideration, but give it a chance.”

Junaid is next set to star alongside Khushi Kapoor in an as-yet-untitled film, which is slated to hit theatres on February 7, 2025.
