Samuel L. Jackson has revealed the secret behind his long marriage to LaTanya Richardson Jackson.

In history on the cover AARP MagazineOctober/November 2024 edition Piano lesson The 75-year-old actor opened up about his 44-year marriage and the struggles they have overcome – including some of the “shit” he has done that he considers “crazy”.

When asked how he keeps his marriage going, Samuel said, “A lot of tolerance, because everyone has flaws, and not giving up when it would be easy to give up.”

He continued: “I’ve done some crazy things in my marriage, you know? She has too, in her head, or whatever in reality, but you have to say, ‘Is it a crime to break up? Or do we just need to spend some time together and figure this out?'”

The Marvel star said the second option is to simply “ignore” the annoying traits of the other person. “Or there are certain things you learn to ignore in people — and she learned to ignore in me,” he said.

Samuel gave an example of something LaTanya, 74, has learned to “accept” about himself over the years: his work ethic.

“I’m going to keep going to work until, you know, it’s my time,” the actor insisted.

Samuel and LaTanya celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary in April, after meeting in college. They have one daughter: Zoe, 42.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine in 2022, the couple admitted that they made a pact to stay together no matter what challenges they faced in their marriage.

“We always said in the beginning that the most revolutionary thing that black people could do was stay together, raise children with a father and a mother at the core, because everyone likes to pretend that that’s not the dynamic of the African-American family,” LaTanya said at the time. “That it’s just children being raised by women, which we know is false.”

She continued: “To change that narrative, we made the decision to say, ‘We are going to be together no matter what. We are going to get through this.'”

Early in his marriage, Samuel struggled with drug addiction. The actor recalled the experience in an interview with AARP, saying, “My wife and daughter found me lying on the floor. My best friend from high school was a drug counselor, my wife called him, and the next day I was in rehab. I didn’t go in kicking and screaming because I was tired.”

Samuel is currently promoting the film adaptation of August Wilson’s play Piano lessonwhich featured most of the cast of the 2022 Broadway revival directed by LaTanya, with Samuel playing the lead role.

Set in 1936, the film “portrays the Charles family in the Doaker Charles home and a family heirloom—the family piano—that documents the family’s history through carvings made by their enslaved ancestor,” according to the synopsis.

Piano lesson will be available in selected cinemas on November 8, and then on Netflix on November 22.
