I’ve tried a few VR boxing games, and none are better than The Thrill of the Fight. I would have liked more variety in the fighting styles of the AI opponents, but the game feels more like real boxing (a hobby of mine) than any other game I’ve tried, and I really like the passthrough option that lets me see the room I’m in so I don’t have to worry about sneaking into my filing cabinet.

It’s my favorite VR game of all time (I admit I still haven’t finished Half-Life: Alyx), or at least the one I’ve had the most fun and practice with. Good news for me: there’s a sequel in the works, hitting Early Access in November.

Unlike the first game, The Thrill of the Fight 2 will have multiplayer support. I’m a bit disappointed that the Early Access release will be Just multiplayer feature, but a single-player mode will follow later. Following the early access launch, creator Ian Fitz — who is working with Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick Studios on the sequel — says the development team plans to begin work on “AI that has more capabilities and combat intelligence” than the first game.

Thrill of the Fight 2 will initially launch only for MetaQuest 2 and 3, but a version for PC-connected VR headsets is “very likely,” Fitz says. I played the first game both connected and disconnected, and while it’s a better experience without a cable (it’s not a graphically intensive game), I was able to get a lot out of it even with the back of my head connected to my PC. Some of the realism may be sacrificed, but if you don’t make the effort to circle your opponent, the game does a good job of keeping them on one side of the ring to avoid getting wrapped up in it.

Of course, this isn’t always the case when the opponent is a human, so perhaps the Quest headsets are the best choice in this case.

In addition to the multiplayer mode, The Thrill of the Fight 2 will launch with a “new combat system with improved physics and damage calculations designed to mimic real boxing” as closely as possible, Fitz says. It will feature skill-based matchmaking as well as private matches.
