Microsoft has released a non-security preview update for Windows 10, version 22H2, that includes fixes for bugs that caused Edge to hang and media playback issues.

Today’s optional cumulative update (KB5043131) is a maintenance release designed to allow Windows administrators to test fixes and improvements. It will provide a more reliable user experience when installing security updates during the mandatory Patch Tuesday update cycle in October 2024.

KB5043131 addresses issues such as Microsoft Edge not responding when using IE mode and work folders not syncing when Defender for Endpoint is active. It also addresses an issue that causes some media to stop playing when using a specific surround sound technology.

To install the update, go to the Settings app, select “Windows Update,” and click “Check for updates.” Because this is an optional update, you’ll be asked to confirm whether you want to install it by clicking the “Download and install” link.

Windows 10 users can also install the KB5043131 patch manually after downloading it from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows 10 September 2024 Preview Update Highlights

After installing this preview, Windows 10 22H2 will be updated to build 19045.4957.

Other fixes and new features in this year’s non-security preview update include:

  • (Start menu) This update moves your profile picture to different positions. The left menu panel also has a new background color, making the items in the panel stand out more. This change may not be available to all users, as it will be rolled out gradually.
  • (Microsoft Entra Single Sign-On (SSO) SSO notes that the European Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires prompting too often. This happens when you authenticate using a certificate.
  • (Country and operator settings resource) This update updates COSA profiles for selected mobile network operators.
  • (File Explorer and Taskbar) Windows server stops responding when using applications such as File Explorer and the taskbar.
  • (Notifications about the possibility of enabling Windows Update) They will now appear after logging in.
  • (Enumerating directories) This may fail if the directory has symbolic links with long target names.

Users running Windows 10 version 2004, 20H2, 21H1, or 21H2 can upgrade to Windows 10 version 22H2 using the KB5015684 installer packageThis package activates features in Windows 10 22H2 that are currently inactive because all these versions share a common operating system core with identical system files.

Microsoft said there is one known issue in the September 2024 preview of KB5043131 that prevents customers from changing their user account profile picture.

In early June, Microsoft relaunched the Windows 10 Beta Channel and announced the first Windows 10 beta build of 2021, three years after the last build was made available to Insiders in the Beta and Release Preview channels.

In August, Redmond released the second Windows 10 22H2 beta since the channel reactivation, containing fixes for the Unified Write Filter (UWF) and the Bindings Filter driver.
