Mary premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received an eight-minute standing ovation that brought Jolie to tears. A bidding war ensued, with the streaming giant winning U.S. distribution rights.

The reception of the film directed by Jackie AND Spencer helmsman Pablo Larraín and written by Peaky Blinders Filmmaker Steven Knight has many critics praising Jolie’s acting and tipping both her and the film for awards success.

When the Netflix deal was announced, Larraín said, “It’s a creative imagination and psychological portrait of Maria Callas, who, after devoting her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides to finally find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I’m deeply honored to be able to tell this story and share it with audiences around the world, just as Maria did with her life.”

Jolie added of her preparation for the role: “I spent almost seven months training because when you’re working with Pablo, you can’t do anything half-heartedly. He demands, in the most wonderful way, that you really do the work, really study and train.”

“The first time I sang, I remember being very nervous. My sons were there and helped close the door so no one else would come in, and I was shaking. Pablo, in his decency, started me in a small room and finished me at La Scala. So he gave me time to grow up.”

Mary will debut on Netflix in the US on 11th December and in UK cinemas on 10th January.
