PlayStation game developers reveal how PS5 Pro will help them achieve ‘ultra-high fidelity at lightning-fast frame rates’

We already know that PlayStation 5 Pro enhanced games will have a special label, but a new PlayStation Blog post has given us a bit more information on how game developers are using the power of the upcoming PS5 Pro console to improve their games.

The blog post, which was published alongside a trailer showcasing several PS5 Pro-compatible games during yesterday’s State of Play livestream, features a variety of quotes from 14 studios about the upcoming console. They range from Sony’s first-party studios to third-party teams, and could give us a good idea of what we can expect when the console launches.

Here are the most important conclusions.

As you might expect, the performance enhancements will be coming to first-party games. Mike Fitzgerald, Core Technology Director at Insomniac Games, confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, AND Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 all of them will be able to achieve 60 frames per second at 4K resolution in the “new default Performance Pro mode.”

Updates will also be made available The Last of Us Part 1 AND The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered according to Naughty Dog. They will offer 4K via PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) upscaling, which “maintains the 60 fps target, offering the perfect balance between frame rate and resolution.”

Interestingly, the original performance and fidelity modes will still be available in these games, although they will run smoother than before.

Jan-Bart van Beek, Studio Director and Art Director of Guerrilla Games, gave an overview of the upcoming big growth Horizon Forbidden West. The existing quality mode will be able to run at 60 fps, and will also benefit from “improved shadows, depth of field, skin and hair shaders, clouds, sunlight, and more” thanks to the system’s increased rendering power.

Newly revealed Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will also arrive with native PS5 Pro support.

At last, Gran Turismo 7 is getting some love. The game, which was “already capable of rendering in native 4K” according to lead programmer Shuichi Takano at developer Polyphony Digital, will gain “more detail and higher image quality than ever before” on PS5 Pro.

This will be in part due to the addition of ray tracing, “which was previously impossible” on the base PS5. This will allow for more realistic car surfaces, adding to the immersion of racing. The game will also support 8K output at 60fps for those with particularly high-quality displays, although this is currently only “experimental.” There’s also no word on whether the 8K resolution that was originally advertised on the base PS5 box will be available in many other titles on PS5 Pro.

Enhanced Third Party Titles

Naoki Hamaguchi, director at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth game developer Square Enix revealed that the game will offer “a new enhanced mode developed specifically for PS5 Pro (that) combines features of the existing performance mode and graphic mode.” This mode will run at 60 frames per second and will use PSSR upscaling to achieve high resolution.

He explains that the name of the mode is still in development, so it may change in the future, but claims that “this rendering will make all aspects of the game even richer.”

Developers from Ubisoft had a similar opinion. Technical Director at Ubisoft Ivory Tower Didier Blanché stated that PS5 Pro will offer “sharper and cleaner image quality thanks to PSSR, with more objects on screen” at a solid 60 fps in Motorfest CrewChief Technology Officer Pierre Fortin added that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will leverage many of the PS5 Pro’s features, including improved ray-tracing capabilities and a more powerful GPU, allowing for cleaner rendering.

Dongki Lee from Star Blade Shift Up creator argued that PS5 Pro will now allow for a 4K 50fps experience in the game. A high frame rate option is also supported, “allowing you to enjoy a smooth gaming experience” at an improved 80fps on supported 120Hz displays.

Similar performance improvements are coming Alan Wake 2 According to Remedy Entertainment communications director Thomas Puha. The 60fps performance mode will feature improved “visualizations and effects” and will now run at 4K resolution, “making the experience look even better than before.” That’s no small feat considering how visually intensive Alan Wake 2 is, and it suggests this could be the first real demonstration of the PS5 Pro’s potential.

First offspring It will also benefit from improved ray tracing to achieve “more realistic and natural lighting and shadow effects,” according to the lead engine programmer at Nexon Games. This is in addition to the addition of FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, which could boost performance even further.

PSSR will be widely used in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta per Konami Digital Entertainment creative producer Yuji Korekado. This will help “ensure smoother gameplay with improved frame rates throughout the game.”

Players of both Rise of the Ronin AND Star Wars Jedi: Survivor We’ll also be pleased to hear that both titles will run better on PS5 Pro, according to their developers.

Electronic Arts also confirmed that Dragon Age: Veilguard will be able to hit 60 frames per second in performance mode on this system, running at a higher resolution compared to the base PS5.

Capcom also revealed that Dragon Dogma 2, which was originally shown in the PS5 Pro announcement trailer, will take full advantage of PSSR to deliver a more stable frame rate. In addition to performance improvements Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village will be given a 120 fps setting, which can provide incredibly smooth performance.

At last, Hogwarts Legacy Developer Avalanche Software has stated that the game will benefit from PSSR, increased performance thanks to the high-powered GPU, as well as new ray tracing features, which will deliver “sharper, richer, and higher-resolution graphics.”

A promising start?

This all sounds very promising and could be a compelling reason to upgrade, though of course only time will tell whether the PS5 Pro lives up to some of those lofty performance promises. The console, which was announced and officially revealed by Sony earlier this month , is currently scheduled to launch on November 7th.
