WWE star AJ Styles has been out of action for some time now. On Wednesday, some updates were released on his status.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported that, given the injury situation in professional wrestling, there is a “belief” that Styles’ WWE contract “is expiring at the end of this year or early next year.”

Styles last performed live for WWE on August 29 during the Road to Bash in Berlin tour at the Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany. His last television appearance was at the Clash at the Castle: Scotland premium live event on June 15, where he lost an “I Quit” match to Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.

Sapp added that Styles is “healthy, off TV, and spending time with his family” as WWE gears up for its Bad Blood premium live event on October 5 (source: H. Jenkins Ringside News). It was also noted that there is no confirmation on whether WWE is trying to sign him to a new contract.

At 47, Styles is still one of the best in-ring performers in all of wrestling. However, he told The Ringer ahead of WrestleMania 40 in April that he was nearing the end of his “phenomenal” career.

“I’m getting to the end. I want to have this story and this match before I leave WWE,” Styles said. “I’m done. I’m retiring. I’m getting to the point where I’m worried about embarrassing myself. My brain is saying, ‘We can do this.’ My body is saying, ‘You’re stupid. We can’t do this. We’re suffering every day when we get out of bed.’ At some point, it has to end.”

If Styles decides to retire from wrestling soon, fans will surely hope he makes one final appearance in WWE, where he can make more memories and go out on his own terms.
